GAETA
Situated between Rome and Naples, Gaeta's port can be used to access either city. Attesting to its importance as a port city, Cicero referred to Gaeta as "celeberrimum et plenissimum navium," or very famous and full of ships. Worth a visit is the Duomo, built in the 11th century. A half-hour away by car is the town of Cassino where you'll find an important Benedictine monastery perched high atop a hill overlooking the town. Be sure to take a look at the hand-painted murals in the crypt below the monastery. Also close by is a cemetery where American soldiers from the second world war are buried.
